As noted on the HOME PAGE, Paul's DMS550 (MLK550L) has seen the light for the first time since 2011 when she was rescued from certain death in a nearby yard where she'd laid for many years. The story of 550 is a happy one in as much as she has now found a good home with Paul who is very enthusiastic about her and keen to get her going PLUS isn't afraid to get stuck in and get his hands dirty. Maybe this time next year I will be writing this saying that MLK has passed her MOT and will be at this years shows...?
TOL the Metrocab is still off the road after fitting a new exhaust and brake work she shall be dispatched for a test soon which will ease the transport situation somewhat. TOL will hopefully be at this years Preston Steam Rally if all goes to plan.
Work this month has seen the fuel system on 5137 (WKO137S) connected up and ready to go and the clearing out of debris from 7656 (XJJ656V).
You may have notice that his months Picture of the Month feature was a tad late, this will also be the case for next month's too as on the 5th April we will be attending the Southeast Bus Festival at Detling Showground near Maidstone and we hope to have a cracking picture of the month for you from there!
As you will know, I sold DMS550 on to Paul Tripptree in June for continued preservation. Paul has been working very hard on 550 since then and had apent a lot of time rebuilding and restoring her. He still has a long way to go but she is certainly taking shape well. I'm hoping to have an update on here soon but if you search DMS550 on Facebook you will find Paul's group. Please support him in this. Just to show you how dedicated he is, Paul currently is without a car so gets the train to Deal and then the bus to near where the bus lives. The downside is the bus stop is 2 miles away from there! I think that must make Paul one of the countries most dedicated preservationists.
Hopefully in the next few months we will be adding another vehicle to the collection. Until she is collected from the sunny Southwest I won't say too much - apart from COACH! As soon as she arrives all will be revealed.
Also plans are afoot to pass on DMS550 to Stuart Boxall who is a huge fan of the type. At the moment she is sitting gathering dust at Sandwich with me having very little time to give to her these days and finish the rebuild. It would also mean that every vehicle we have could potentially go on the road straight away (even 5807 when her engine is sorted out) which means they are less of a liability. I will of course be keeping all the DMS related pages on the site including 550 page for the time being. This certainly won't be the last DMS I own as, like Stuart, I'm a huge fan of this very under rated bus and will be keeping my ear to the ground to find and rescue any others that head my way.
Yesterday (Sunday 12th) Claire and me went down to Sandwich and started work on DMS550 for the first time for many months. All the woodwork under the windsrcreen that had rotted has been replaced with seasoned treated hardwood. Some replacement panel were acquired from DMS1968 and one of these have used in the centre dash panel. It looks rough but isn't patched like 550's original one. Whilst Claire started cleaning the glue off the inside roof panels (from the soft trim) I was fitting the panels on the front. This proved tricky as the person who had offered to replace all the woodwork had not fitted a lot of of it properly and this all had to be re cut and refitted. Moral of this story is it you can do it yourself then do so and don't let muppets near your buses! She's coming on slowly and will look better with the panels on and the front platform finished off. Once this is done I can start working on the mechanics and get her a service.
I now have really nice blisters on my right hand doing up the screws that hold the panels!
Good news is that 7681 passed her test today at Canterbury. She drove perfectly there and back after spending last night in Thanet (it was an early test!) showing that keeping her mileage down this year has helped iron out some of the little problems she was having. Next year of course is 681's big three oh birthday and also 10 years of her being in my ownership so around September we will certainly be holding an event of some kind, probably around Thanet. Over the winter I hope to tidy her up a little bit and sort out the opening front windows. I was thinking about getting 'EK' stickers to go over the NBC double arrow too as this would show how she would have looked post privatisation before receiving the 'new' maroon and cream livery. It would also compliment 7980 and National 1178 (when she arrives!) too. The jury's still out on that one though.
Elsewhere, fomer copshop 5807 will be off road for the next year or two. She still has the tendancy to throw a wobbly when she get warm which I will be getting fixed in the next few months if it proves to be the fuel pump. Not only that she is proving very valuable as a store room / office / canteen too. I'm keeping her mobile with little trips around the yard but her upper deck in now full of VR and Titan spares.
DMS550 is still slumbering in the garage at Sandwich. Everything is there to complete her but it just needs putting on! Again, this winter I'm hoping to progress on 550 and maybe move her towards an MOT too.
