13/12/2015 More National News.Work is progressing really nicely on 1178 (EFN178L). The former wheelchair lift doorway has now been totally replaced with a standard panel and emergency window meaning she's looking pretty much like her old self again. This has been a big job on this side alone with the door and the rot in the window pans. We've still got the front, rear and offside to do. The offside looks to be fairly easy whilst the front and rear are suffering from major rot. She will also be repainted too. Work is progressing really nicely on 1178 (EFN178L). 5/12/2015 What's It All About? Those of you who regularly read this blog will quite often stumble across my musings and ponderings of the whole bus preservation thing. Having owned 7681 since 2001, I've only been in the preservation movement a fraction of the time that some people have. I've had the pleasure of meeting some truly great people, some who started the whole bus preservation movement off in the 1950's- without them where would we be now? At the same time, I also meet or encounter people who leave me wondering why they're actually in the bus preservation movement at all. So why do we do it then? To safeguard a vehicle for future generations? A hobby? A personal challenge? A fad? Something to do?
The whole point of bus preservation is to save, look after and (maybe) restore. I say maybe restore, well, the theory is that as long as the vehicle is still around it can be restored one day. We all have financial problems occasionally where we buy something and then our situation changes but with something like bus preservation you tend to muddle through. Obviously there are exceptions like starting a family, retirement or job loss which would mean that you'd have to prioritise and sell your pride and joy. This leads me to my point that over the last few years I've noticed a trend amongst some of the newer members of the preservation movement to buy and sell and chop and change their vehicles at a rate that would put a dealer to shame! Faults develop with the vehicle and / or they grow bored. These aren't the same as the serious types who aren't professionally skilled but learn and adapt how to resolve problems. At the drop of the hat the vehicle is sold as soon as it had been 'saved' which is a real shame as there has been and will be some nice and potentially rare vehicles lost this way. Bus preservation isn't really a fashion. If you want to try it, help out with a group or a trust that has vehicles. There are hundreds across the UK and at least several in the Kent area who has lovely vehicles and would appreciate the membership and assistance. The worst thing would be to buy something then discover its not really for you and have to sell it. Remember, bus preservation isn't really like other hobbies. It's time consuming, expensive and sometimes emotionally draining. If you're not ready for that, stick to collecting toy buses! |
