As you know, I'm rather partial to these plastic taxis and today picked up another one for the collection. This is TLX and differs from the others by being a series 2. Bought via eBay, she was collected from Chessington from the owner /driver of many years. Over this cab's career she's carried Will Carling and Carol Vordeman to name a few. Stored up for a few weeks whilst we replace the kingpins, she will be on the road this season.
This coming August will be the third anniversary of the formation of the Southern Counties Omnibus Collection. So how did we get to being Southern Counties Omnibus Collection? As fans of "what might have beens" we decided on basing the collection on a fictional National Bus Company subsidiary. So, where would Southern Counties Omnibus operated? Well, that's very much up to your imagination however, we like to speculate what would have happened East Kent and Maidstone & District had merged in the 1970's as were the original National Bus Company plans. Maybe they would have been molded into one big company which would have been rebranded? What it would have been cold is purely speculation. It might have incorporated part of the 'Road Car' element of East Kent and the 'Motor Services' element of M&D. Or they may have wiped the slate clean and gone right back to the drawing board going for something fresh yet traditional like 'Omnibus Company'. What ever the decision would have been I suspect that it wouldn't have lasted under the Market Analysis Project in the 1980's. More than likely by the early 80s, the two companies would have gone back to the original names and formation. Something along the lines of what happened to Hastings and District. So it was with all this in mind that the name Southern Counties was chosen for our rag bag collection of buses from Maidstone area fleets and East Kent fleets, as well as lots of other vehicles from other areas across the south of the country. At the time of formation most of the buses in the collection work of a National Bus Company parentage. It seemed a logical thing to do to adapt National Bus Company image. The green Maidstone and the red for East Kent. However, since then we have acquired lots of buses from other areas and also buses that never operated within the National Bus Company. We are constantly developing an image that, whilst it is uniform it can be adapted per vehicle and per timescale the vehicle is portrayed in. Long term the plans will be to have all the vehicles are road worthy and to have some kind of tagline on them that states they are members of the Southern Counties collection. We are going through a very exciting time at the moment and there will be a lot of changes in the next few years!
